Linda Roberson has a unique place in Wisconsin legal history as the drafter of the most critical legislation affecting Wisconsin families. She drafted the Wisconsin Divorce Reform Act which was implemented in 1978 and the first several drafts of the Marital Property Reform legislation in effect since 1986. She has been at the forefront of practicing under these legislative acts for almost 40 years.

Linda Roberson is a co-founder and shareholder in Balisle & Roberson, S.C. She concentrates her practice in the areas of divorce litigation, cooperative divorce, estate planning, non-traditional families, alternative dispute resolution, and appellate practice.

Education & Experience

While in law school, she clerked for the Honorable James E. Doyle, Federal Western District of Wisconsin. After receiving her J.D. cum laude from the University Of Wisconsin Law School in 1974, Attorney Roberson served as senior legislative attorney for the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau and in that capacity participated in the drafting of much important legislation including the Divorce Reform Act and the Uniform Marital Property Act.

She has an extensive appellate practice that has yielded numerous published decisions including the Court of Appeals’ landmark decisions in Hubert v. Hubert, 159 Wis. 2d 803 (Ct. App. 1990) and Hokin v. Hokin, 231 Wis. 2d 184 (Ct. App. 1999)and Chen v. Warner, 2005 WI 55, 280 Wis. 2d 344, 695 N.W.2d 758 .

Achievements in the Legal Field

In addition to her private practice, Attorney Roberson taught family law and marital property courses at the University of Wisconsin Law School for 25 years. Recent publications include Eckhardt’s Workbook for Wisconsin Estate Planners (coauthor, 1990, revised periodically, The Marital Property Classification Handbook (co-author, 1999), and Sexual Orientation and the Law in (co-author 2015).

She also writes for lay audiences; publications include co-authorship of “Look Before You Leap: A Guide to the Legal and Financial Implications of Marriage and Remarriage in Wisconsin” and “Family Estate Planning In Wisconsin”, both published by UW-Extension. For a decade she wrote a popular legal advice column for the Capitol Times.

She is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin (member of Family Law, Real Property and Probate, and Taxation sections; served for three years on its Continuing Legal Education Committee), the Dane County and American Bar Associations, and the Madison Estate Council. A past president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a past director of the State Bar’s Family Law Section, Attorney Roberson is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), and the American Bar Foundation, a founding member and past chair of the Divorce Cooperation Institute, a founding member of the Legal Association for Women, and the 2003-2004 chairperson of the Family Law Council of Community Property States.

Attorney Roberson was selected by her peers for inclusion in the 2014 & 2015 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Recognized for Superb Service

Attorney Roberson was designated Madison's Family Lawyer of the Year for 2010 by Best Lawyers in America. She has for many years been listed in Best Lawyers of America, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who of American Women, and Martindale Hubbell’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. She was a nominee for the 2004 Athena Award, which recognizes women for professional excellence and community service.

Involvement with the Arts

Ms. Roberson has been active in local arts organizations: she has served on the Token Creek Chamber Music Festival Board of Directors from 1993 to 2013, served on the board of the Children’s Theater of Madison from 1989 to 1994, and is a past member of the University of Wisconsin Choral Union.
