Linda Roberson,
Shareholder

Linda Roberson is a shareholder in Balisle and Roberson, S.C. She concentrates her practice in the areas of divorce litigation, cooperative divorce, estate planning, non-traditional families, alternative dispute resolution, and appellate practice.

While in law school, she clerked for the Honorable James E. Doyle, Federal Western District of Wisconsin. After receiving her J.D. cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1974, Ms. Roberson served as senior legislative attorney for the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau and in that capacity participated in the drafting of much important legislation including the Divorce Reform Act and the Uniform Marital Property Act. She has an extensive appellate practice that has yielded 11 published decisions including the Court of Appeals’ landmark decisions in Hubert v. Hubert, 159 Wis. 2d 803 (Ct. App. 1990) and Hokin v. Hokin, 231 Wis. 2d 184 (Ct. App. 1999).

In addition to her private practice, Ms. Roberson has taught extensively at the University of Wisconsin Law School and in continuing legal education programs. Recent publications include Eckhardt’s Workbook for Wisconsin Estate Planners (coauthor, 1990, revised periodically, most recently in 2004); and The Marital Property Classification Handbook (coauthor, 1999). She also writes for lay audiences; recent publications include coauthorship of “Look Before You Leap: A Guide to the Legal and Financial Implications of Marriage and Remarriage in Wisconsin” and “Family Estate Planning In Wisconsin”, both published by UW-Extension.

She is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin (member of Family Law, Real Property and Probate, and Taxation sections; served for three years on its Continuing Legal Education Committee), the Dane County and American Bar Associations, and the Madison Estate Council. A past president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a past director of the State Bar’s Family Law Section, Ms. Roberson is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, the International Family Law Society, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, a founding member and current chair of the Divorce Cooperation Institute, a founding member of the Legal Association for Women, and the 2003-2004 chairperson of the Family Law Council of Community Property States.

Ms. Roberson is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who of American Women, and Martindale Hubbell’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. She was a nominee for the 2004 Athena Award, which recognizes women for professional excellence and community service. Ms. Roberson is active in local arts organizations: she has served on the Token Creek Chamber Music Festival Board of Directors since 1994, served on the board of the Children’s Theater of Madison from 1989 to 1994, and is a member of the University of Wisconsin Choral Union. For a decade she wrote a popular legal advice column for the Capitol Times. She is licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin and the U.S. Federal Western District of Wisconsin.
